Growth on renewable energy continues in Turkey

TAKİP ET

Taner Ercömert '' The big goal of the energy sector in Turkey is to reach 100 GW of renewable power generation capacity before 2040.''

Growth on renewable energy continues in Turkey...

Growth on renewable energy continues in the world, in Europe and in our country, Turkey too. Turkey’s renewable power plants had a record capacity increase of about 5 GW in 2020.

’ We are delighted that the growth on renewable energy continues in Turkey and renewable energy continued to contribute on decreasing Turkey's energy import expenditures in 2021 too. ‘’ , the executive member of the Hydroelectric Power Plants Industry Businessmen Association (HESIAD), Taner Ercomert, told Enerji Ekonomisi...

Taner Ercömert, being one of the leading experts in the energy sector indicated that the country's current installed renewable energy capacity exceeded 52.9 GW in 2021 with an annual increase of abot 3.7 GW. Of the total installed capacity of 99.4 GW as of January 2022, renewables account for more than 53 %.

We support the energy policy that aims to increase the share of renewables in the country

Turkey supports renewable energy investments through its current Renewable Energy Support Scheme (YEKDEM), which started in 2011. The scheme supports wind and hydropower plants at $ 0.073 per kWh, geothermal plants at $ 0.105 per kWh, and solar and biomass power plants at $ 0.133 per kWh. These figures can increase slightly depending on the use of locally-produced turbines and/or generators. As you remember, earlier announced expiry of YEKDEM scheme on Dec. 31, 2020 year was extended to June 30, 2021 later on, due to the Covid-19 pandemic caused a supply chain disruption on power plant equipment.

Taner Ercömert revealed that in the 2022 YEKDEM final List, while there are 1034 power plants with a capacity of 25 524 MWe, the largest share in the list was again for hydropower plants with 11 793 MWe.

Distribution of installed generation capacity by resources:

Natural gas, liquefied natural gas and naphtha constituted 25.55 GW of installed capacity in Turkey while total coal power installed capacity comprised 20.33 GW.

Renewable plants total installed generation capacity is now 52.9 GW

with

Hydropower :  31.48 GW ;

Wind power :  10.43 GW ;

Solar power:     7.79 GW ;

Geothermal power:  1.65 GW ;

Biomass power:        1.54 GW

‘’ Although the spread of COVID-19 partially continued last year too, it is glad to see that renewables deployment continued to grow in 2021 and Turkey's renewable power generation capacity increased about 7.5 % ’’ experienced name in the energy sector- Ercömert said.

'The country’s valuable hydropower, wind, solar, geothermal and biomass power plants all together contributed greatly to our economy by helping to reduce the country’s energy import bill' Ercomert explained.

In percentage terms, out of total power generation in Turkey, renewable energy accounted for more than 35 % in 2021.

New country records were reached in electricity consumption and generation in 2021

In our country, records were renewed in terms of daily electricity generation and consumption last year with 1.163 billion kWh and 1.153 billion kWh respectively on August 4, 2021.

While the renewable power capacity (exceeding 49 000 MW in 2020)  approached 53 000 MW in 2021 in our country, the share of renewable resources in total installed capacity rised above % 53 as of January 2022.

In Turkey, 2019 was the year of hydropower generation records, 2021 was the year of wind power generation records. Hopefully, in 2023, when we will proudly celebrate the 100th anniversary of our Republic, will be the year of solar power generation records and we will see that the share of solar energy in electricity generation has exceeded 10 %.

The big goal of the energy sector in Turkey is to reach 100 GW of renewable power plants before 2040

In 2022, the installed capacity of both wind and solar power plants is expected to approach 20 GW separately, while the installed capacity of hydroelectric power plants is expected to exceed 32 GW.

Taner Ercomert forecast that Turkey could reach over 60 GW on renewable electricity generation capacity this year and hopefullly above 70 GW  in 2025; above 100 GW befoee 2040.

Ercömert finally said that ‘' We support the energy policy that aims to increase the share of renewables.’’
